Hike and Brunch in San Antonio at Friedrich Wilderness and Mimi's Cafe

Hike and Brunch in San Antonio at Friedrich Wilderness and Mimi's Cafe

Friedrich Wilderness Park Hike & Brunch at Mimi’s Café

Just a few miles outside of Loop 1604 on I10 West is Friedrich Wilderness Park.  In addition to nearly 10 miles of hiking trails, it is home for rare birds, terrestrial orchids, steep hills, and deep canyons. It is internationally known for bird watching. Perched on the edge of the Balcones Escarpment, Friedrich is a nesting site for two federally listed endangered species of birds: the Black-capped Vireo and the Golden-cheeked Warbler.

The trails at Friedrich range in difficulty from Wheelchair accessible to “Very Difficult”. This wide range of trails is one of the reasons I chose Friedrich as the first of our Hike & Brunch locations. Another being that I’d never actually hiked there. I did do my homework though and did a few pre-hike hikes. I wanted to be knowledgeable for the different capabilities of our members.

I never want one of my members to think that their physical capabilities is an obstacle for joining us on a hike. I’m A-Okay with taking a more relaxed route for those that needed it. For this hike I was lucky enough to have our member Blanca along.  I know Blanca frequents this park and she graciously agreed to take those members who wanted a more challenging hike with her while I took those who needed to stay on the more level paths.

For the ladies in my group we started on the Forest Range Trail (Accessible, .4 mile), took a short Water Trail (Moderate, natural terrain) over to Juniper Barrens Trail (Moderate, .15 mile or natural terrain), and looped back to Forest Range Trail and cut through Grey Fox Pass (Accessible .05 mile). We were able to loop and zig around a few times and come out on the bottom of the Main Loop Trial. All while the others hiked Main Loop Trail (Moderate to Difficult, 1.7 miles).

The greenery at Friedrich is great. Most of the trails are quite shaded. The parking is slight. It was overflowing onto the street by 7:20am. During the weekdays it’s not that busy. I’ve been there at 6pm and haven’t had issues parking.

We completed our hike(s) within an hour. The time flew and gave us a chance to chat and get to know a little bit more about one another.

Then we headed over to Mimi’s Café at The Rim. They were very smart in seating our group of 16 ladies in the back in a room to ourselves. I didn’t realize that so many of the ladies hadn’t eaten here. Mimi’s is French inspired comfort food. The food is fresh and delicious.  They offer something for all tastes. One of their specials for this particular weekend was Chicken & Waffles. While I sadly couldn’t partake in that dish our member Robin did. I had a bite of the chicken, I couldn’t NOT do it, look how crispy and enticing it looked! The breading was panko-ish and just perfect!

A great meal, even better conversation. It was such a pleasure getting to know our members a little better, I might even remember faces & names, thanks Dawn for the name game! If you were on the fence about joining us this go around I hope this little bit of information helps you in deciding to join us for our next Hike & Brunch. Keep an eye on that calendar! Updates coming soon!
